March 1, 2007—Out & Equal Workplace Advocates urges the city council of Largo, Florida, to reverse the unfair and discriminatory decision to fire Steven Stanton, the city’s longtime city administrator, less than a week after she disclosed she is embarking on sex reassignment. Employees should be evaluated based on their skills, experience, and performance, not on their gender identity or expression.
“The decision to fire Stanton is disappointingly discriminatory and we hope that with better education, the city council, citizens and employees of Largo will come to embrace equality for all employees,” said Selisse Berry, Executive Director for Out & Equal. “This decision also illustrates just how important it is to pass legislation protecting people against discrimination based on sexual orientation and gender identity, and we call on the citizens of Largo and all of Florida to urge their elected officials to pass employment nondiscrimination laws.”
Out & Equal is experienced in helping workplace environments embrace and include transgender people. As the only national nonprofit organization focused exclusively on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender workplace equality, Out & Equal has developed a cultural awareness training curriculum based on 10 years of experience working with many of the nation’s largest and most influential corporations. Should the Largo City Council reconsider their decision to fire Stanton, Out & Equal will be happy to provide a Building Bridges: Transgender Diversity in the Workplace workshop for city employees.
