Eight months ago, Lena Waithe spoke to the Workplace Summit. She spoke of her determination to tell Black stories from the Black perspective.

“I’m going to bring my whole community with me every time I show up, wherever I go,” she said. This commitment also informed her work in Queen & Slim.

“You should know what it means to be Black so when you interact with a Black person, you have a better understanding of who they are and where they’re coming from… it is extremely important that the lion sometimes tell the story, because when the hunter tells it, we will always be conquered… I must reflect the times in which we live. And Black people are being hunted by police.”
