Adapting Global Best Practices in LGBTQ+ Workplace Policies in APAC
Session Details
Building inclusive workplaces in regions where LGBTQ+ individuals lack legal protections requires both courage and creativity. This session explores how leading organizations across APAC are adapting global best practices to advance LGBTQ+ inclusion within complex cultural and legal landscapes.
Grounded in NYU Professor Kenji Yoshino’s three models of corporate engagement, we will focus on the embassy model, where multinational companies act as safe havens for inclusion within their own workplaces while respecting local contexts. Participants will gain insights into how organizations are implementing nondiscrimination policies that explicitly include sexual orientation, gender identity, and gender expression, even when external protections are absent.
You will:
- Explore the “Embassy Model” of corporate engagement – a framework that encourages companies to serve as safe and inclusive spaces for employees while respecting local contexts—and understand its importance in advancing LGBTQ+ inclusion in regions without legal protections.
- Gain insights from real-world examples of how organizations in APAC have successfully adapted global LGBTQ+ workplace policies, from inclusive benefits to equitable family leave, in complex cultural and regulatory environments.
- Learn practical approaches to balancing global values with local realities, empowering participants to foster workplaces that uphold inclusion, respect, and belonging across diverse markets.
