Out & Equal Workplace Advocates is saddened by the recent youth suicides brought on by bullying and harassment based on sexual orientation or gender identity. As an organization that champions workplace equality for all, we strongly believe that all youth should feel safe and valued in their own “workplace” – their schools – regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity, expression, or characteristics.
Throughout the 2010 Out & Equal Workplace Summit, speakers, attendees and participants alike emphasized the importance of providing safe communities for LGBT youth. Thousands of Summit participants signed pledges “to take actions that will help stop the bullying of lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender youth.”
On Friday October 8, 2010, Out & Equal Workplace Advocates was honored by the Gay, Lesbian and Straight Education Network (GLSEN) at their annual Respect Awards. Out & Equal’s Founding Executive Director, Selisse Berry, commented on Out & Equal’s commitment to providing safe places for all. Berry said,
“If you think about it, we spend so much of our life in school when we are younger and then we spend so much of our life at work when we are older. So, between the two organizations, we support the LGBT community our whole lives and together we are making a huge impact on society and the world!"
As part of our organizational commitment to creating safe spaces, Out & Equal offers resource guides highlighting a variety of excellent programs, organizations, and online projects dedicated to supporting LGBT youth. As an ongoing project; new organizations will continually be added to each resource guide. Out & Equal is proud to partner with fellow lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender equality organizations and projects in an effort to stop bullying nationwide.
