Brigadier General Tammy Smith Receives Advocacy Award for Workplace Courage

- Each year, Out & Equal Workplace Advocates honors individuals and
organizations who demonstrate workplace courage and who support
lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) equality. The Out &
Equal Advocacy Award specifically recognizes those who take the lead on
fundamental issues of equal rights in and out of the workplace.

Smith for her courage and leadership as she came out to her country as
the highest ranking, openly LGBT officer in the United States Army.
Tammy's 26 years of military service include duty in Afghanistan and
promotion to the rank of brigadier general. She is married to Tracey
Hepner, a co-founder of the Military Partners and Families Coalition.
"Continue to live your authentic life," Smith told the audience. "Say
the words that you want people to repeat, engage in the behaviors that
you want others to model. Hold your head up and be proud, not only of
who you are in your workplace or community, but of who you are at your
