Out & Equal applauds repeal of DADT

Out & Equal Workplace Advocates celebrates the repeal of the long-standing, discriminatory "Don't Ask Don't Tell" policy. With the President's signature, this legislation will finally eliminate institutional discrimination against lesbian, gay and bisexual service members in the one workplace in this country most responsible for protecting equality for all Americans.

Out & Equal's Founding Executive Director, Selisse Berry explained, "This is an exciting victory for workplace equality and an important step toward the day when everyone - including the brave men and women in our armed services --  can bring their full selves to work.  We are grateful to the President and those members of Congress whose perseverance made this day possible.  We look forward to the day when employment nondiscrimination becomes the law of the land for all employees - including members of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender community - through passage of a fully inclusive Employment Non Discrimination Act."

Out & Equal also applauded the rule change announced earlier this month by the Canadian military that allows transgender soldiers to wear the uniforms of their target gender.

Beyond the President's signature on the bill, based on the House-passed legislation, we encourage the President, the Secretary of Defense, the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff to quickly certify that the military is prepared to make the change so that the 60-day waiting period prior to implementation can begin.
