2013 Chicagoland Citywide Pride Calendar of Events

Citywide Pride 2013 is a year-round series of presentations and networking events sponsored by Chicago area companies and organizations to promote diversity and inclusion in the workplace, share best practices, raise awareness of important issues, and celebrate the contributions of the lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender (LGBT) workforce and community. Citywide Pride, now in its 12th year, is organized by the Out & Equal Chicagoland Leadership Council.

You are invited to join in a discussion moderated by William Lopez (Hinshaw & Culbertson LLP) and featuring Christopher Clark Sr., Staff Attorney for Lambda Legal and two of the plaintiffs in the Darby v Orr lawsuit, Mercedes Santos and Theresa Volpe.

Darby v. Orr was filed by Lambda Legal on behalf of sixteen (16) plaintiffs against the State of Illinois for excluding them from the right to marry.  The presentation will focus on the legal issues, considerations and strategy, and how being named plaintiffs in this very public civil rights case has affected the lives of the two women plaintiffs.

Pennsylvania State Representative Brian Sims did not set out to become a politician, but rather, he came to the position through his advocacy work beginning in college, later as a disability rights attorney, and more recently as a prominent leader in the LGBT civil rights movement. Representative Sims will share his journey coming out in college as captain of his football team and how his ongoing community engagement and leadership with diverse groups of people has helped him today, including his historic election in 2012 as the first openly LGBT person elected to the Pennsylvania legislature.
